    Presentation: Technocommercial Realism

antimemoria_ (Ervin Nanco)Plataforma de investigación, experimentación y curaduría

A theoretical proposal on how technology ceased to be a sphere apart from the offline world and came to operate at a planetary scale, turning every cultural relationship into a commercial one.

    Read in full

This talk presents Technocommercial Realism, a theoretical proposal grounded in one premise: through its historical development and recent advances in generative artificial intelligence, contemporary technology has reached a point at which it can no longer be identified as a sphere separate from the offline world. Instead, it operates at a geological and planetary scale, as Benjamin Bratton argues.

This prominence is driven by capitalism, which directs technology toward a model of vast scale that permeates every cultural relationship and turns it into a commercial relationship mediated by technological value. It continues the historical curve of specialization and division of labor that, according to Marek Poliks and Roberto Alonso Trillo in Exocapitalism (2025), rises toward levels of abstraction increasingly distant from social reproduction. The system extracts value from every human interaction —whether related to work or not, including trends such as doomscrolling and the betting market— and subjects culture and the limits of reality to a circulating unit on its own terms.

Technocommercial Realism describes this absolute subjugation of every mode of existence to the logic of exchange, extraction, production, and circulation of value in service of capitalism.
